Anyone who knows me well knows I adore Myst and Riven. Every so often I get in the mood to do a little 3d art and I listen to the Myst and Riven soundtracks and get a little nostalgic. Now, of course, I also have RealMyst and URU and Exile, etc., but those first two games are the joy of it all for me. This SEE site is full of photos of things that seem to resemble Myst and Riven in the real world. Take a look around... Short, but good fun.
Oh my God! I had no idea this was here! I am a huge fan of Robyn Miller's soundtracks for Myst and Riven, sometimes listening to them every day for months at a time... His music is a large part of the inspiration behind my own Orphic Endeavors. This site has links to music he does now, art he has done over time and other cool stuff. If you are, like me, tired of the "Star Wars"/"George Lucas-type" monster that Rand Miller's MYST game series has become, go to Tinselman and see how the other half of the Miller brothers creates. Please listen to the music too. I'm not a fan of lyrics and singers (except for opera and choirs) but the music is unmistakably Robyn Miller.
After having just watched "Ju-On, The Curse" I was in the mood to see some abandoned buildings in Japan. Here's a great site filled with beautiful photographs of buildings and other things. Check it out.

(This site is in Japanese, but it translates very well in Babelfish. Photos really need no translation however if you choose not to translate. The Japanese characters in the title of the page were gibberish in this weblog, so I had to use Babelfish to translate the title. I apologise for that. I would prefer visitors being able to see the original title. Sorry. This is a limitation of this software.)

not pr0n = SEE (and think) site

not pr0n

I'm only on level 11... This place is so hard! My advice is make sure you keep notes! I've been saving all my answers in notepad as I go so I can get back to where I stopped and not have to resolve puzzles.

Another thing... It's really hard not to see spoilers when you search on Google. Doing that thing they suggest, putting "-www.notpron.com" in your search really doesn't help much. You still see dozens of sites working on this same puzzle. Be careful when searching!

My only complaint is that I have to use Internet Explorer to play through this thing. I am not an IE fan and don't like being forced to use it. There was a plugin you could download to be able to hear the sound in Firefox, but plugins sometimes really freak out my computer so I didn't want to take that chance.

****UPDATE****
Okay, I got up to like, level 33 or 34 or something like that. It had actually gotten easier. I think I was starting to understand better what I was supposed to be looking for. I must admit though, getting "help" from their forum was useless. I got more help from just my kids sitting here next me and brainstorming. It is a highly addictive and absorbing game, but, the creator is a bit well, creepy. I've read some of the other threads at the forum there and I have to say, I don't care much for the bunch. A game should be fun, right? And some people like walkthroughs, right? I wanted hints, not a walkthrough because a walkthrough destroys the fun of the game. But, when you go to the forum there and look in their directory by level of hints most of the time you get nothing. Not a thing. I had to go elsewhere to find true hints. Not cool. Now, when you search Google, I don't care how many different ways you do the search, you nearly always see Not Pron links come up. That means there are thousands of sites out there with answers emblazoned everywhere. So, the creator changes some of the answers. Okay. That's cool. No problem. I actually tried one of the "wrong" answers to see what would happen and I got a little image calling me a cheater and telling me to go back. But the more I think about it and the more I read what goes on over there the less I feel I can promote this "Not Pron" site. Frankly, I say go to Google and type in some random word and click image search. It's more fun. And you find really cool websites that way like this one: http://home.f01.itscom.net/spiral/ or this one: http://www.angryalien.com/. Anyway, if you still want to go to Not Pron, enjoy. I think I am done. I know I could solve the puzzles, but damn, I hate turning on IE for anything....
So, I was looking through a magazine and there was this article about engineered fruits and vegetables and there was this photo of two guys standing on top of a giant corncob on a cart being pulled by two mules. I thought, no way that's real... So I looked it up and sure enough there was this guy back in the early 1900's who was doing what is now refered to as "Photoshopping" waaay back then... Amazing.
There is a side story along the way in this movie where Amelie makes her father think about travelling by stealing his gnome and sending it on a trip around the world with a friend. (The idea's been stolen (poorly done though) by Travelocity and I don't know but I certainly hope that Jean-Pierre Jeunet was paid for the use of the idea.) Anyway, here's an idea along those same lines, but this time it's a duck and I believe he's travelling via a motorcycle? In any case it's a fun place. Take a look at the album and wish you were there.
Yet another interesting artist. I don't remember how I stumbled on this one. I just remember I really liked the work and thought I should link to it. Please check it out. There's a lot of surrealism which is one of my favorite things.... maybe it's because I just finished working on building the Cable Cars of Zander robots, but I really like "Cyber 3".
The more you learn about me as you look at my huge website bpgisme.com the more you will find I have a tremendous love of art of all kinds. Every time I find a site filled with art that interests me I put a link to it here on SEE and SAY. I found this actually from looking for sculpture sites, and though I like the sculptures shown here, I believe it's the paintings which captured my attention. For some reason the color red seems so full of depth in these paintings. I think of wolves and the color red when I think of this artist. See for yourself.
Anyway, the site is an experience in BIG and LOUD and BRIGHT and DYNAMIC! In fact it reminds me of a photo I saw of a street in Tokyo.
The catalogue of UK Entrances to Hell

Okay... Why is this listed as a SAY site when it's a site of photos of "Entrances to Hell"? Well, I went here from a list of links on Urban Exploration which I have a huge armchair kind of passion for. I expected scary disturbing doors. What I found was a bunch of anything that looked remotely door-like. In other words, this was NOT what I was looking for: http://www.entrances2hell.co.uk/page277.html I was looking for stuff more like this: http://www.artm-friends.at/
The flip side of this is that the little blurbs under each picture are pretty funny in a dark and twisted sort of way and THAT's the reason why I list it as a SAY site rather than a SEE site.
I was wandering around the internet when I stumbled on a page of photos of Tokyo. It was interesting, but what was more interesting to me were the decayed backsides of some of the buildings. So, that led me on a search to find decaying buildings in Japan and from there I discovered this site filled with ruins. I used a translator and read every page and examined every photo. It's avery interesting site. Take a look.
I have an interest in signs and machines and things like elevators and odd staircases that go nowhere and such, so this place is quite a find! I was actually researching ghost ships, or rather vessels that have been abandoned on the ocean and such and are or were still floating. (Mostly because I just saw that movie about the Mary Celeste.) In this search I found this page through the Google image search: http://broken.typepad.com/b/place/ Now that's not exactly a happy playground. One thing I have always wanted to try but have never really had the chance is sculpture. In some ways my messing around with 3d rendering is part of that. I guess even building the website itself is an extension of that.

These pieces vary wildly to me. Some of them I don't like, an example is: MILLENNIUM. I just look at that and I see a small hunting knife with legs. But then there are some of these that I think are fantastic like: PASSENGER #3. The female forms that are more "complete", meaning they have heads and bodies and legs (though most don't seem to have arms) are very reminiscent of fashion drawings particularly of the 1950's and 1960's. I used to handcraft high fashion dolls and sell them to fashion doll collectors and I went through hundreds of fashion books from those time periods as well as the the 1920's and before for ideas for my dolls. But, alas....though some sewing probably IS sculpture, mine was unfortunately just to make a buck.... Kills the joy and the beauty, I think... Anyway, enjoy looking at these pieces.
Excuse me, but AAAAAAGGGGGHHHHIIIIEEEE! While I don't deny that this sort of art can be difficult I really think that $10,000 for a wrinkled piece of paper cut to look like a tank top is ridiculous! Give me $10.00 and I'll do the same thing. Geez. And though I'll admit the grand piano is beautiful, I don't think I'd pay $75,000 for it. That's what we owe on our HOUSE. Good lord. Tell me people have better ways to spend their money... It's just really unfair. I can't get anyone to buy a $10 T-shirt with an original painting on it and yet this guy can cut up a wrinkled piece of paper and earn half of what we live on in a year. Ugh.
Wow! What a story! The initial crash and rescue of the men was interesting alone, but then the thought of those planes ending up beneath 268 feet of ice is just amazing. And just think, there are still a whole collection of planes they left behind including a B-17. Imagine in the future... Someone finding those one day... This may sound stupid, but I kept thinking about the X-Files movie and that giant UFO that was hiding under the ice. Amazing.

ARC International - The Art Renewal Center = SEE Site

ARC International - The Art Renewal Center

I don't think much of the site design in Firefox. I'm not sure how it behaves in IE but the popup menu gets in the way and refuses to go away at times, but the art is beautiful and the reading is interesting.

I do not agree with some of the views expressed here, as I am a fan of most art and include Modern Art in that, but other things I do agree on so I guess you take the good with the bad and get what you want out of the articles. Otherwise though, the fantastic quality of the images is very pleasing to this artist's eye and I enjoyed that very much.

In regards to one of the articles, I will only add that my only complaint with modern art is random art... I once watched an episode of "That's Incredible" (showing my age again) where a man stood behind a jet plane while the engine was running and splashed paint on a canvas. It was stupid and ugly then and still is, but what this man at the ARC was speaking of as being "bad" is not the same thing. Though I am not a "fan" of Picasso I can see that what he did was art. And there is a school of thought that says realism isn't art, so there. Again, I do not subscribe to that myself, because I was ridiculed by my teacher in art class for my pencil drawings being too realistic and not "arty" enough. I can see both sides to this argument on both and I have to disagree. Realism is art, and Modernism is art. I guess what I feel is this: An artist mentally conjures up an image in his mind. He creates that image in a physical form. That is art. When a man splashes random paint on a canvas letting it be blown off by the wind of jet engine that is not pure art. That is an experiment with paint. That is like rolling paint covered marbles on pieces of paper in grade school. Then it becomes a "craft project" and not really a piece of pure art. That's what I think anyway... As Dennis Miller would say, "I could be wrong."

By now I guess you can tell I like art. Well, here is a site that's actually a collection of works by someone named Jane Andrews. I found it while doing a Google image search on the word "Sideways" and the resulting painting, "The Art of Looking Sideways" inspired me to see more. Why was searching the word Sideways? Well, I noticed during my Dr Pepper image search that a lot of folks put photos up on their sites without changing the orientation. I don't know why. It's not that hard to do. But anyway, I thought I might find someone's site with nothing but sideways photos. Instead I found these nice works of art. Still looking for sideways photos though...
I stumbled on this place just now while eating a bit of a late night snack and typing in random words in Google. Can you believe this? People dig up bottles in old trash piles from the Victorian era! Amazing! And what a lot of cool stuff they find too! Makes my adventures in the thrift store seem too easy by comparison!
I use Thingamablog for one third of this website. Honestly, the only reasons why I even found Thingamablog are because my webhost was going through some frequent downtimes while setting up new servers and I wanted to be able to write entries and save them offline to be posted later, and the other reason was because I didn't want to go through uploading each image one by one when doing my galleries. I wanted to be able to upload it all via ftp and use a table to display it in the blog. Thingamablog can do that. I edit the html and get it how I want it using Html-kit and Netscape composer and then I upload the code in my Thingamablog. Works like a charm.
I saw this site a year or two ago and I hunted it down just so I could post it here. This is a little window into one woman's world as she goes on a road trip with her husband and his sister and her husband in 1937. One of things I found so interesting about this besides the great photos and the little tidbits of info you learn as you go were the pages of expenses that she kept as they went. She kept track of how much everything cost the whole way and how much they spent as they went. To go completely through the trip takes a while, so settle down with a glass of something and a snack for this one.
This is a "peep" show that's not what you'd expect. It's beautifully decorated bird "boxes" that host various small birds and their families in exchange to filming them and turning them into an internet reality show. The live feed isn't on currently, but there's recorded segments from the last live shows online. This place is just so cute. You can't help but smile and go "awww". My Mom would like the miniatures too.
This one is apparently a game. I haven't tried to finish it all the way through though. It's one of those almost cryptic games that you need a walkthrough to get through. Okay, I need a walkthrough to get through it! I admit it. I'm not much of a game player unless it's made by the Adventure Company or it's one of the Myst series.

Ah.... Simply too short... I really wish there were more of these. I could think of about a thousand movies they could do too. In any case though, if you like "cliff notes" you love these bunnies. I've never really had any interest in "The Shining" or "Jaws". (Especially "Jaws". We live on the beach! You just don't watch "Jaws" when you live on the beach and are terrified of the ocean in the first place!) So, this website gives you the gist of a small collection of "classic" films, "Alien" (one of my favorites), "Titanic" (overblown and hyped ridiculously... I admit it, I just can't stand Leo... Besides he looked about ten years younger than her. Not to mention shorter.), the aformentioned "Jaws", "The Shining", and "the Exorcist" (which you would think I would have seen, but I haven't). Each one is less than 30 seconds as portrayed by bunnies. Fantastic!

My husband found this site and sent it to me.
I feel a little dumb about this one on two counts. First, I couldn't figure out how to get in from this main page. I've just been to so many websites where you click the door or the doorknob or whatever the image is that it didn't occur to me for quite a few long seconds that maybe I should click the words under the image. Click and there you go. Right in the door. This is where the words "click to enter" might come in handy to us dummies.

Anyway, dumb count number two is, I can't remember why I found this place. It had to do with a conversation with Nathan? Or a reference in a movie review I read? Or both? It had something to do with a movie. I do know that. Crap. I just can't remember. In any case though, it's another site filled with photos of an abandoned asylum. The history is interesting as well.
Another really cool underground "city spelunker" site. This stuff is just so cool. Having never lived in a truly big city myself (the largest I've lived in was Wilmington, NC) I really have no concept of what it must be like for there to be all these cool tunnels and streets under your feet in big metropolises! I read where in some really older cities that there are layers and layers of these underground worlds beneath the streets and the buildings. Visions of Anne Rice's vampires flicker in mind while gazing at these dripping places. Permanent darkness. I wonder if there are blind mice?
The truth is, there's lots to see and lots of stuff to read here too. I chose not to link to the top page because this was how I found this place. I had just typed in some random words and got this link and I thought it was really funny. The Orange Cones pages are my favorite, but the idea of going to an aquarium and not taking pictures of the fish is perfect so I highly recommend this site to peruse and wander for refreshing enjoyment.

And speaking of refreshments, check out this page! Kibo's Fake Dr Pepper Roundup. As a Dr Pepper-holic I laughed my head off at this page. I actually subject my kids to Dr. Thunder from Walmart because it's only 50 cents a 2 liter. They and my husband always try to tell me it tastes just like Dr Pepper, but I guessed better and now I know better! Ha!
Just pull up a mouse and have at it. This stuff is fascinating. If you have an interest in abandoned buildings there is nothing more surreal than a huge section of a ship just sitting there decaying on an island beach. Check these oddly creepy photos out.
the World as a Blog

Well, it's sort of a "SEE" site too, but since the content comes from random weblogs all over the world I feel I really have to call it a "SAY" site.

Anyway, click the link and watch the tiny dots pop up. It's neat to think the world can fit on this screen and you can actually see and interact with someone on the other side of the world at this exact moment. Anywhere. Man, the internet is just so cool.
It's funny. It was rather violent, but I loved Reservoir Dogs and the guy I liked the most, Michael Madsen, I just didn't know much about at the time. Later I found myself taping every movie that came on that had him in it, and believe me, he's been in quite a few stinkers, but some gems as well. So, why do I include a link to his official website as a "SEE site"? This tough guy writes poetry! Geez. Who'da thunk it?

By the way, check out the photo gallery and have a peek at the shots of the cowboy version of Madsen! Amazing! You know, here's a guy I'd like to see do something besides cop or crook more often.

I read Richard Bach's Illusions in 1979 when I went on a trip to Washington, DC with my special "gifted and talented" summer class. I had some money, but being afraid to spend any of it, all I bought were two books. One by Carl Sagan (Cosmic Connection) and the other was Illusions. (I really didn't think about buying gifts or touristy trinkets for my family and I was actually berated for not doing so when I got home. The truth is that I was so stressed out just being there I thought I had done good just by making it through the trip in one piece. I was even proud of having spent very little of the money. I see now, that was almost an Ian-like way of dealing with the trip and I wonder how much of my growing up was perhaps in some ways like his. I wonder if my childhood was tainted a little by NLD or maybe even some mild autistic tendencies. For years I didn't understand what I had done wrong. To this day I don't buy touristy things for anyone when we go on trips, but I think about that incident in Washington, DC every time I go or anytime someone brings ME something from a trip.)

Anyway, this link really came from me doing a little research on collective consciousness. My son thinks, based on a discussion on world religions in his class at school, that I would be a good Taoist. Then I read my brother Nathan's latest dispatch and his views on his own beliefs (in his case disbeliefs) and that made me think about what I really do believe. I keep a small collection of Buddhas in my livingroom. They face the rising sun for prosperity. Maybe that's a little superstition creeping out in me, I dont know. I also have a Jesus statue (Buddy Christ) above my computer, but it's from the movie Dogma which I think was Kevin Smith's story to tell. (Which brings me to another belief - I think each of us has one story we are supposed to tell. One thing that is the centerpiece of all that we will ever do. The masterpiece that is the single most important of all. It's the book that takes 30 years to write, the screenplay that sits and festers in the back of your mind for years until you finally force it alive on the big screen, the song that keeps playing and playing in your head until you get it recorded, the sculpture that you see in every block of wood, every chunk of stone, until you carve it out, a house that must be designed because you see pieces of it in every building you like, etc. But, that's another story....Now back to this post, already in progress...) The closest might be Pagan, because some of the Pagan stuff I have an easier time believing, but in the end, I just really believe there is collective consciousness. I don't even know if there's a religion out there for this or what, but this particular website actually voices what I have discussed with my husband many times before. A collective consciousness would explain so much, from the reason why ten people in various parts of the world get the same idea all at once but only a couple of them actually do anything with the idea, it would explain the presence of ghosts (not the silly seance kind, but the kind that appear regularly to people who know nothing about them or their history until after they've seen them and do some research - for instance, the Maco lights) psychic ability (suspend your disbelief for a few minutes please - Most of these are fake too, but occasionally in history one comes along that you have to wonder about) and even dreams. Also the whole "God" concept can be explained as a collective consciousness thing, although I think the truth about religion is that it was needed to keep the peace, to keep people from stealing and killing their neighbor and all the other bad things that come from a lawless society. I think society itself created religion to make people behave. Pretty simple if you think about it.

By the way, I still have that same copy of Richard Bach's Illusions...

The Shadowlands: Ghosts and Hauntings

I'm not sure exactly what to say about this site without offending it's owner. If the guy had left his own tale as just a ghost seen many times over the years, I probably would have somewhat believed him, but adding the "imps" and later the "7 foot tall man shaped black figure" just really added to my disbelief. If I was to tell a ghost story, I would say I can see a boy, not really a boy so much as a young man, standing in the grassy field where he died oddly enough of a heart attack and is still standing there waiting for someone to explain where he needs to go, but to add imps and tall figures and other such "apparitions" coming along to "help" because they were accidentally "invited" to just screams "No way".

Anyway, just read some of the stories and judge for yourself.
Okay, this one is really both a Say and a See site. It's fascinationg to learn about historical places both abandoned and occupied. I like to think of the layers of history in a place. There's a lot of that locally. For example, Brunswick Town no longer exists and yet was once the county seat....
So useful. Especially when you are looking for something like an abandoned school that you saw while coming home down an old highway...

-Abandoned NC: Urban Exploration In North Carolina-

Living in North Carolina and traveling around the back roads and forgotten former major highways one finds just hundreds of abandoned buildings. Just around us here on Oak Island are at least four large buildings that are now vacant and decaying. I don't understand the reasons for the waste, but they are quite beautiful to photograph. Check this site out and view some great old forgotten buildings in other parts of North Carolina.
I really love Tableman the best, though all of these are really interesting. I like the idea of the art of this guy. There's a mystery there, almost like a story that hasn't been told yet. Very cool.
This is one of the coolest, most inspiring sites to me. It made me start my own creepy project, House of Dreams. Check this link out... In the dark.... Late.... When the moon is black.... By yourself.... Yeah.....
