Up In The Air~~~~and other oscar winner type doodles

I enjoy the Academy Awards each year. I always watch thinking soon I will take my rightfull place at the awards show for some brilliant film I haven't made yet. (hahaha) So year, after year I enjoy the show in the privacy of my own home. Well this year featured some films I had allready seen, and some I hadn't. Avatar of course was big on my list. I have been shouting from the rooftops about how good this movie was going to be long before it was even released. Ben Stiller had a great moment at the awards show in Navi' makeup. So with the upgrade to my home entertainment center I now am in the glorious era of Blu Ray! True Hi-Def to dazzle my eyeballoonies. Weee. I am constantly amazed how much difference there is between Blu Ray, and DVD. Wow! So of course being the Oscar junkie that I am, I decided to get two of the movies that won several awards, including best picture. Yeppers I got "Up In The Air", and "The Hurt Locker" both on the lovely Blu Ray disc. Up In The Air was very good. It resonates with feeling. George Clooney was great. It's cool to see the son of Ivan "Ghostbusters" Reitman directing the type of films his dad never made. Jason directed most notably "Juno" which got alot of attention. It was sort of a coming out party for both Ellen Page, and Diablo Cody, as much as for Jason himself. Funny, but somehow the movie wasn't very enjoyable to me. I liked it, but I found it unsettling. I was surprised that I liked Diablo's movie "Jennifer's Body" as much as I did. I thought it was great. A fun weird stylish horror film. Anyway Jason Reitman continues to grow as a film-maker. I did see his first film "Thank You For Smoking" It was good, but not great.

Whip It ~~~~One must own DVD weeee

Whip It looked like it was going to be cool way back when Drew Barrymore was first promoting it, and appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. The movie is Drew's directing debut, and as Jimmy said that night "she hit it out of the park." I whole heartedly agree.

She brought more to this movie than just a sense of style, but she infused it with a real knowledge of film making which of course comes from growning up a movie star, and working non stop on films her entire life. The movie is pitch perfect from start to finish. It has a great story, based on the novel "Derby Girl" by Shauna Cross. The cast is stellar including the brother of Luke, and Owen Wilson who I don't think I've seen before, Andrew Wilson. He was fantastic as the coach of the Roller Derby Girls team "The Hurl Scouts".

Ellen Page continues to delight, and amaze in her odd deadpan delivery with tons of emotion boiling beneath the surface acting style. She is truly a big time star on her way to the top of the A list. The cast is a big ensemble cast is awesome. When you have this many characters in one film, you don't know if some will get lost, but they balance it nicely giving everyone a good amount of screen time. I thought it was funny that Drew plays a goofy reckless character with very little dialogue.

She also cast another favorite actress of mine stuntwoman Zoe Bell. Since her appearance in the Grind House movie Death Proof she has started to get more acting roles, and should. She is always entertaining, and since she is a top Stunt Woman she can nail any physical demands her roles require.

Another great actress featured in this movie was Juliette Lewis as Iron Maven. She was the perfect rival for Ellen Page. A rivalry that somehow seemed to go beyond the movie into real life careers. Without any real animosity. The movie captured growing up in a small town quite well, since I lived in Texas fresh out of High School I could relate to the characters desire to get out of a small Texas town. Jimmy Fallon was brilliant as the ring announcer looking tired, and hung over (which he was of course) so method acting, hahaha. All of the girls in the movie really learned to skate, and became quite proficient at it. By the end of making this movie they really were pro skaters. A co-worker of mine said she didn't want to see this movie because it was about Skating, which seemed boring to her. I explained that while that is an element in this film, it hardly is a sports movie, and is by far character driven. The sports element is handled perfectly being interesting without dominating the film. It avoids sport movie cliches. Yet still has some sports drama. Anyway I think this is a great movie, and I can't recommend it enough.

Inkheart~~~If you write it, they will come...

Inkheart is a really cool movie based on a book by Cornelia Funke, and the first book of the Inkworld trilogy. Anyone who loves to read will enjoy this movie. It has enough of the joy of reading, and writing through out the film to entertain, and thrill you. That is my opinion of course. Not everyone agrees, like USA Today for instance here is a bit of that review
"Much is made of the magic of literature in Inkheart, but the joys of losing yourself in reading are undermined by the movie's barrage of special effects and a convoluted plot."
Of course I disagree. I thought the Special effects truly brought the movie to life, and really for me this film was a pleasant surprise. I of course always seem to enjoy Brendan Frasers films.

Jenifer's Body~~~A new cult classic woo hoo

Ok, so this film famously tanked at the box office. Why, one wonders. I think first off it has something to do with the title of the film. It doesn't sound right for the cool horrorfestorama that it is. Second it has something to do with Megan Fox. Like maybe people don't like her. Don't get me wrong I like her just fine. I'm just not sure if the general public does. This film features two girls in the lead, and it just seems like it would have been a hit. I mean come on two hot actress' er...actors (that's what the girls want to be called from now on) A script from the inimitable Diablo Cody, and some director I've never heard of. Instant classic...right, sort of. Well let's start with the director. She did the movie Aeon Flux the live action version of the old MTV cartoon. I don't recall much about the movie other than it pretty much was crap. So you wouldn't think that she would do such a great stylish job on Jenifer's Body. The movie has a great look, and feel to the entire movie. With a few standout shots throughout. The swimming naked in the lake scene for instance. The long shot is eerie, and beautifull. I truly think that one of the things that hurt this R rated film was the lack of nudity. Men in general would have liked this film alot more with just a bit more in it. I'm not saying a movie has to have nudity to be any good, but damn, it never hurts. You kind of expect it in a horror flick too. A grand tradition going way back to the classic sixties Hammer Horror films.

Hmm lets look at some reviews first off.

here is an excerpt from the all knowing all seeing Noah Berlatsky
"Cody gets off a couple of good lines ("she's actually evil, not high school evil"), and there's a gleefully oleaginous performance by Adam Brody as a black-souled (but still sensitive) indie rocker. Overall, though, the flashes of competence just emphasize the extent to which the film has no idea what it's doing."

Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium~~~Why don't people like this great kids movie? Maybe they aren't literate enough to pronounce the title..hee hee

(Before I start my lovely review, I would like to mention that today is my birthday, and I turn 7 in dog years. Sigh...which means I'm getting to be pretty damn old.)
"Happy Birthday to MeeEee, Happy Birthday to0o MeeEee, I'm so freakin olllldddd, everywhere I go I have to PeeeEeee!"

Mr Magoruium's Wonder Emporium. Another really well written film from one of the top screenwriters in Hollywood today, Zach Helm. He also skillfully directed this fun movie. All I knew about this movie was it more or less tanked at the box office, and critics hated it. Why? Let's see if we can find out. it scored a abysmal 27% at Rotten Potatoes. Here is some snippets from top critics:
"It’s so intent on being whimsical, so aware of its own whimsicality, that it ends up being not very whimsical at all." Richard Roeper
Wrong Roeper your review is so intent on being critical, and so aware of your own critique, that it ends up not being a valid review at all. Ha.

"Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium is what happens when too many sappy sweet instincts chase too few original ideas." Bruce Newman.
Ha, while I would be reticent too not mention the obvious simularities to uhm say Willy Wonka, I must respectfully disagree with your diatribe. The script was full of wonder, and originality, especially in the dialogue. As I mentioned above Zach Helm is one great writer. No question about it.
"This isn't quite the over-the-top fantasy you'd like it to be, but it's a charming enough little movie, and probably the younger you are, the more charming." Roger Ebert. Well, finally a review I can't actually slam. I agree to a point with Mr. Ebert, as I often do. He has always been a fairly spot on reviewer who rarely misses the point of a movie.

"Instantly forgettable except that it contains the worst performance of Dustin Hoffman's long and illustrious career." Colin Covert.
Well Colin I must say in my humble opinion I truly think you wouldn't know your ass from a hole in the ground. Not only is your review offensive, but ill informed, and just plain ignorant.

(this Jackass goes on to say) "The production design, ablaze with over saturated "happy" colors, and the ham-handed musical cues, try to browbeat you into a good mood, but most viewers above the age of 6 will be aching to escape the toy haven before their popcorn has cooled."
F you, and the F'n horse you rode in on. It kills me when newspapers pay these but-wipes to go sit in a theater, and watch movies, and all they can come away with is how much they hated the very films that they are being paid to enjoy. Jerks, I Tell's ya' JERKS. First off, I found Dustin's performance to be very enjoyable, and I thought very clever. It's not easy being a new Willy Wonka.

Second, the film is the opposite of instantly forgettable. There were many delightful aspects of the film, from the acting, (great all around) to the absolutely brilliant art direction, and execution of bringing a toy store to life.

"Wonder is the key, and it's lacking in a major way. Should you decide to see it anyway, you might wonder what you're doing there." Bill Goodykoontz.
Good God, the only wonder here is why in the world would the Arizona Republic newspaper pay you to write reviews. It makes me glad that newspapers are on there way out, and soon GoodyPoots like yourself will be out of work. Can you say "would you like fries with that"? It serves you right. you have no right to write. HA HAhahaha. hey it's fun to slam critics. weeee.

The Monster Squad~~~I know Halloween is over but man is this one great buried treasure!

Ok, I missed the Halloween hootenanny by this much. Just the same this movie is just too cool to not review. The Monster Squad is a hidden gem from the late eighties, that very few people know about. It had real fire power in the production crew from the likes of Stan Winston, and visual effects by Richard Edlund. This is a just plain fun kids movie from start to finish. It has lots of humor, a few minor scares, and all the cool monsters. Dracula, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein, the Werewolf, and The Mummy. This movie should be shown every Halloween, it is the perfect fun movie for parties, and uhm Halloween activities. It was created by Fred Dekker, and he had a little help from his then roommate Shane Black. The movie was a mega-flop in theaters, and pretty much killed Fred Dekker's career before he really got going. hmmm lets see what others think of this flipadoody flick...

A funny thing happened on my way to reviewing the long-awaited Special Edition "Monster Squad" DVD: I couldn't find a copy! From Best Buy ("we'll have some copies next week") to Circuit City ("monster what?") to Walmart (gimme a break) I wandered one sweaty Tuesday afternoon, slowly becoming more convinced that the DVD missed its release date. At one store I did see an empty display section with a sticker that said "Mon Squ" next to the sticker price, but no DVDs. Eventually I found a Target that had a few copies, so at least there's a happy ending. Not only did a finally get a copy of this amusing little movie (and all its "special edition" goodies), but I did my part for horror geeks everywhere. Next time something like "Monster Squad" comes up on the order sheets, I bet Best Buy, Circuit City and Walmart snag a few lousy copies. (Oh, but "Hills Have Eyes 2"? You could fill a million landfills with the Hills 2 DVDs I had to wade through on my journey.)
So now. After about twenty years, how does Fred Dekker's cult favorite hold up? Is it actually an entertaining movie -- or has the passage of years contributed to turn a kitschy little curiosity into an overrated "niche" item? Well, after watching the movie for the first time since its theatrical run I can safely say ... it's fun stuff indeed. Clearly low-budget and more than a little outdated in many ways, but still fun stuff. It's like a combination between "Stand By Me," "The Lost Boys," and "The Goonies" that was directed by someone who admires the Joe Dante school of movie-love. And when a movie's this in love with movies in general, that's a pretty tough flick to knock.
thanks to Scott Weinberg on fear net for that succinct little review.

by the way can you beat this go toAmazon.com and buy The Monster Squad (Two-Disc 20th Anniversary Edition) (1987) you can get it used for under 3 buckaroos. Woot.

Australia~~The rain will fall, the grass grow green, and life it begin again.

Australia. What a great F'n movie. Epic in scope. Intimate in detail. Filled with fantastic actors, portraying equally fantastic characters. I loved every minute of this movie, and it flew onto
my "top ten favorite films of all time list" wow how cool is that. It's been a very long time since I have seen a movie that could make me say that. I'm not alone either here is a snippet of what Roger Ebert had to say about this great movie"

What a gorgeous film, what strong performances, what exhilarating images and -- yes, what sweeping romantic melodrama. The kind of movie that is a movie, with all that the word promises and implies.

Baz Luhrmann dreamed of making the Australian "Gone With the Wind," and so he has, with much of that film's lush epic beauty and some of the same awkwardness with a national legacy of racism. This is the sort of film described as a "sweeping romantic melodrama," a broad family entertainment that would never have been made without the burning obsession of its producers (Luhrmann for "Australia," David O. Selznick for "GWTW"). Coming from a director known for his punk-rock "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet" and the visual pyrotechnics of "Moulin Rouge," it is exuberantly old-fashioned, and I mean that as a compliment.

Here is an excerpt from some Aussie blokes blog from Perth. Interesting don't you think.:

"David worked on that film Australia," someone whispered.
I wandered over and introduced myself, asking what he worked on during the project. 'David' explained that Baz had employed him to ensure the authenticity of the Aboriginal language captured on film.
"It was lucky," he said. "If they'd filmed a few kilometres further north it would have been another language spoken in that country and someone else would have got the job."
David had just got back to the Kimberley after a couple of weeks post-production work in Sydney. He and his wife had bought their son down for treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital and were staying at Ronald McDonald House while they were in town.
"Don't like this cold weather," he said with a rue smile.
To him the work was no big deal. He was just a bloke from the Kimberley who was lucky enough to land a job with a pretty big film that rolled into his corner of this vast continent. His son also managed to land work as a stand-in actor to one of the lead cast members. It was after this meeting that I decided that yes, I would go and see Australia at the cinema and add my few dollars to the gross ticket sales that determine the success or failure of a film. If Baz was prepared to go to such lengths to ensure the authenticity of the Aboriginal language spoken in that particular area of Western Australia where the film was shot, then he's got my two thumbs-up.

he's just not that into you ~~~Flower Films rule!

he's just not that into you was the latest Flower Film to come out. until this month when Drew Barrymore released her newest film "Whip It"
Flower Films is a film production company that was founded by Drew Barrymore in 1995 with Nancy Juvonen. here is the list of movies that they have made so far:
1. Never Been Kissed (1999)
2. Charlie's Angels (2000)
3. Donnie Darko (2001)
4. Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003)
5. Duplex (2003)
6. 50 First Dates (2004
7. Fever Pitch (2005)
8. Music and Lyrics (2007)
9. He's Just Not That Into You (2009)
10. Whip It! (2009)
they also produced a fun christmas tv show called "Olive, the Other Reindeer" released in 1999.
Wow that's quite a list. my faves from that bunch are easy. Whip it, he's just not that into you, Duplex, 50 first dates, and Donnie Darko.

The surprise movie of the bunch is easily Donnie Darko a cult classic that is such a unique film, and so odd you wouldn't guess in a million years that Drew would have picked it to get made. As you can tell from the list Drew usually stars in the movie she chooses, but sometimes just has a smaller role.
One neat thing about their run is they started with the movie Never Been Kissed, which is a fairly good romantic comedy, but with a cast of actors who all went on to do tons of other movies. including: David Arquette, Molly Shannon, Michael Vartan, John C. Reilly, Allen Covert,

Jessica Alba, and there was a guy in the movie with a very small part named James Franco who had only done three episodes of TV shows, and this was his first movie. It also had Marley Shelton who went on to be in both of the Grindhouse movies. Never Been Kissed had some creepy undertones about a nice teacher who falls in love with his student Drew who he doesn't know is actually 25 instead of a teenager. For some reason this bit of story line just adds a creepiness to the film that it really doesn't shake.

So continuing in that fashion brings us to the movie "he's just not that into you" which also has a huge cast of talented actors all of who are showing up everywhere. Including:
Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Scarlett Johansson, Justin Long, Jennifer Connelly, Ginnifer Goodwin, Kevin Connolly, and Bradley Cooper.

The movie is a cross section view of many different relationships, with Ginnifer Goddwin's Character GiGi being one of the most interesting. She gives a really great performance, and you find yourself rooting for her to find mr. right. The movie is very well written, and a great romantic comedy, that isn't too funny, and never gets too melodramatic either. It does have some drama, and normally I like Bradley Cooper, but in this movie he plays a real shit. Apparently in real life Ginnifer, and Justin hit it off just like in the movie, and have dated.

Now talk about some drama, he has been linked to dating Drew for along time, and they have had an on again off again relationship. I bet we don't see Ginnifer in anymore Flower Film's.

Big Nothing~~~is really a very BIG SOMETHING, a true Cult Classic!

The essence of the title, as it has to do with the movie escapes me. Really it could have been called anything but "Big Nothing"

I found this movie to be a wonderful dark comedy of epic proportions. A true cult classic, and a great surprise. I kind of remember when it came out, and instead of making a splash at the box office it made a ker-plunk. I'm not even sure you can call it a comedy, but it does make you laugh many times through out the horrific proceedings. I've seen other films try to do this type of movie, and fail miserably. ie 2005's The Big White. A dark comedy starring Robin Williams that just didn't do it for me. Ironic coincidence on the titles. Where the Big White misses, The Big Nothing Scores. Here is a really nice explanation of the term dark comedy;

The dark comedy genre of movies is one that has a relatively small fan base, but it’s hard to find a more devout group of movie goers. A good dark comedy movie manages the difficult task of blending the dark and twisted with the hilarious, often delivering both at the same time. If you’re watching a dark comedy and laughing your head off, but feeling horribly guilty about it at the same time, then the film has successfully managed that balance.
One of the most interesting things about dark comedies is that individual preference plays such a huge part in determining which are “best.” Three top ten lists could have thirty different movies on them depending on what worked for each viewer and what didn’t. The challenge of the film makers is to make a funny movie twisted, but not so much that the audience “Gets off the train.”
Many of our most classic films are dark comedies. Here is just a few of my faves
Heathers
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Very Bad Things
Dr. Strangelove
The Big Lebowski
as I think of more I'll add them to this list.

Here is a very nice concise summary of Big Nothing... (thanks Fandango)

Director Jean-Baptiste Andrea's wicked, jet-black comic thriller Big Nothing stars Friends mainstay David Schwimmer as Charlie Wood, a onetime American professor now married to a policewoman, Penelope (Natascha McElhone) and living in Oregon. As the story opens, Charlie takes a job as a telephone operator at an Information Technology call support center, but is promptly fired for making offensive comments to a customer. One of Charlie's shadier co-workers, Gus Dickinson (Simon Pegg) wheedles him into his plan to blackmail a priest, Rev. Smalls (Mitchell Mullen) by using "inside" information from the company that demonstrates the minister's obsession with internet porn. Thus begins an endless series of Mametian twists and turns involving double-cross, mistaken identity, forced drownings, poisonings, infidelities and cold-blooded mariticide, as the men attempt to collect on the money but run head-first into one outrageous conflict after another. Alice Eve, Mimi Rogers and Jon Polito co-star
